One pic a day: January

This year I decided to participate in a one-pic-a-day Flickr group. I don’t really have a decent camera, and if I did I probably wouldn’t be carrying it around with me. So it will probably be a year of iphone photos.

This is January, with a few missing shots because I didn’t always get around to uploading every day. I’m doing better so far in February!

I’m enjoying this project way more than I thought I would. I find myself looking at things differently, and I’m learning a lot about editing, filters, and all that. Plus it’s a fun, supportive group!

Yesterday we went to the Kamloops Christmas Parade, mainly to see Margueritta and Hilda from Turtle Valley Donkey Refuge Society. You can spot them in this little movie. Turtle Valley won first prize for best float!

This event was a way bigger deal than I thought it would be. Victoria Street was just swarming with people, and the parade was a hoot. I took a few photos of my favourite parts. I especially liked all the animals, and the western theme you’d expect in Kamloops. Somehow I missed getting a photo of Roller Derby Dolls though!

I’m waiting in anticipation for reports from my dog owner friends about the Cesar Millan “show” in Kamloops last night. I hope after all the public controversy and words of caution from reputable animal behaviourists, that his army of producers, directors, mangers, stage hands, and writers will be careful about what is presented as sound handling methods. It obviously makes for good entertainment, or he wouldn’t have such a big following, and we wouldn’t be seeing evidence in our neighbourhoods that people are keenly practicing “Cesar’s Way”.

Unfortunately, all the staged drama can make dog owners think he’s magic. His charm draws attention away from inhumane techniques. This will lead us further down a path of euthanized dogs resulting from people who are so intent on showing their pets who is boss, that push them beyond their threshold

This is Cesar’s best bit of advice: “DON’T TRY THIS AT HOME”.

I’ve been away for a week in Ontario. Half of the trip was spent with great friends. Lots of good belly laughs! Then the other half was spent inside a convention centre in Hamilton. Not enough fresh air and exercise, lousy coffee and too much of it (why does that happen?), and musty carpet fumes. Gag. Am I ever glad to get back to this.
