The week after 11 month-old Maggie Brown came to live with us in September we began basic obedience classes at 5 Star Dog Training in Kamloops. We’ve been taking classes ever since, and will probably never stop. I’m learning so much about dog training, and Maggie has come a long way… which is good because she had a long way to go!

Today we were challenged to record a trick or behavior we are training using positive methods. I had already used my iphone to record some video on the weekend during a walk in Lac Le Jeune park, so I thought I would do a quick edit job and post it.

Description:

I’ve been working with Maggie to stay closer to me when off leash. I want her to be able to go off and do dog things, but to also be aware of where I am and to check in now and again. I started off with a clicker (a few weeks before this), and every time she turned her head to look at me I would click, then treat when she came to me. At first I would need to back up quickly to get her to come. Then it got to the point where she was constantly looking at me, so I added the hand touch. Now she looks, and if she sees the hand she will come to me. I am starting to fade out the treats so she doesn’t get one every time, but I always say ‘yes’.
